(RNN) - Russell Johnson, the actor well known for playing the Professor in Gilligan's Island has died at 89.

Johnson's wife, Constance, confirmed to ABC News that the TV star died early Thursday morning of kidney failure.

"He died at home, peaceful, in his sleep at 5:21 am today," she said. "[He was] a very brave guy who knew what he wanted, and he wanted to be at home."

Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on the sitcom, said on Facebook, "Russell was a true gentleman, a good father, a great friend, and ‘the rest.' I love him and shall miss him. My heart goes out to Connie and his daughter Kim. I love you."

Mary Ann and Ginger, played by Tina Louise, are the only surviving members of the cast.

Bob Denver who played Gilligan died in 2005, Alan Hale known as the Skipper died in 1990, Jim Backus who played Mr. Howell died in 1989. Natalie Schafer, Mrs. Howell, died in 1991.

Along with other TV shows, Johnson appeared in several films, including sci-fi movies It Came from Outer Space and This Island Earth.

Before pursuing acting, Johnson joined the Air Force and served in World War II.

Johnson leaves behind his wife and a daughter, Kim.

  When "Freedom" Isn't Free...

Freedom Industries might just go down in history as the Hooker Chemical of the 21st Century.

Quote:Meet Freedom Industries, the Company Behind the West Virginia Chemical Spill

Some 300,000 residents of Charleston, W.Va., and environs are going into their fifth day without tap water for drinking, cooking, or bathing after a coal-processing chemical leaked into the local water supply from a plant on the Elk River. That plant is owned by a closely held company called Freedom Industries. Many West Virginians, not to mention state and federal investigators, have questions about Freedom Industries. Some preliminary answers:

How long has this outfit been around?
About two weeks, in its current form. Freedom Industries is the product of a merger effective Dec. 31, 2013, that combined Etowah River Terminal, the facility where the leak occurred, Crete Technologies, and Poca Blending, located in nearby Nitro. A predecessor company called Freedom Industries was formed in 1986, according to our colleagues at Bloomberg News. How the pieces of the newly formed mini-conglomerate fit together merits urgent inquiry, as does the question of whether there’s any connection between the corporate mash-up and the fateful opening of a one-inch hole that allowed a noxious chemical to escape.

Who’s behind Freedom Industries?
Gary Southern, company president, has been speaking on behalf of Freedom. Legal filings show that Southern is also the president of a company called Enviromine Inc., which supplies “environmental chemistries and services” to coal companies.

Interesting:  Note the connection to coal, aka "fossil fuel."  Yes, fossil fuels have played an important part in our nation's growth and history.  So did Conestoga wagons, at some point--and nobody drives those wagons around, anymore.

Why the sudden formation of a new company on December 31st?  A worthwhile question, I think.

I find the name of this company very ironic, considering the overflow of false patriotism and hypernationalism cranked out by the Extreme Right during the past couple of decades...

The only "freedom" anyone will enjoy out of this escapade will be the freedom that certain top-tier executives will enjoy when the fly the coop to live out the rest of their comfortable lives in Switzerland, the Caribbean, etc.

"And so in my country you're seeing a horror show. You're seeing a retrenchment in terms of family income, you're seeing the abandonment of basic services, such as public education, functional public education. You're seeing the underclass hunted through an alleged war on dangerous drugs that is in fact merely a war on the poor and has turned us into the most incarcerative state in the history of mankind, in terms of the sheer numbers of people we've put in American prisons and the percentage of Americans we put into prisons. No other country on the face of the Earth jails people at the number and rate that we are."
